Functioning as the exterior interface of the human body with the environment, skin acts as a physical barrier to prevent the invasion of foreign pathogens while providing a home to the commensal microbiota. A single square centimeter of the human skin contains up to millions of microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, mites and viruses. These diverse communities can provide protection against disease, but can also exacerbate skin lesions, promote disease and delay wound-healing. Ongoing investigations of the human skin microbiome strongly suggest a connection between skin diseases and skin health. Specifically, identification of changes associated with cutaneous disease, including acne, atopic dermatitis, rosacea and psoriasis, are being established. Here, in Bionos, we analyze the skin microbiome of each specific volunteer after collecting skin samples using swabs, through 16s RNA deep sequencing with Ion GeneStudio™ S5 Plus System, with particular attention to potential opportunities to leverage the skin microbiome as a diagnostic, prognostic and/or therapeutic tool.
