From molecules to sensations: the Olfasense toolbox for Cosmetics and Perfumery industries

Technology & engineering

Information

Olfasense wishes to cover the market demand of the FMCG, Cosmetics and Perfumery industries in the field of odour detection thresholds. The aim is to offer new specialized services based on robust and scientifically sound methodologies. We already have extensive in-house databases and we possess the knowhow and infrastructure to conduct new assessments. Our methods for this purpose include dynamic olfactometry and GC-(Sniffing)-MS analysis, which integrate both the sensory and chemical aspects of the odour perception. Once a deeper insight on individual odorous compounds is achieved, a more integrative approach on fragrances made of complex mixtures of several volatile compounds will be undertaken. It should be noted, though, that there are synergistic and antagonistic effects among concurring odorants and that the perception of single compounds does not imply that their sum is equivalent to the overall perception of their mixture. Also, in relation to the previous, at Olfasense we want to develop a new service based on manufacturing tailored synthetic chemical mixtures that mimic complex odours and fragrances. Certain industries need to work with chemically defined formulations, in order to perform olfactory tests that are reproducible and can be standardized. This is the case of the Products & Materials sector, to simulate bodily fluids for performing deodorant and other personal hygiene products efficacy tests; such an approach could also be extended to other sectors.
